Here, we break down our top tips for beginners and recommend affordable guitars to get you started.

OVERT'S top picks for Beginners

Westfield Stratocaster

This is easily one of the best guitars for beginners, with 3 pickups, any user can easily modify their sound to their preference, whether it be muddier or bright and clean.

It is also perfect for blues and jazz with its whammy bar.

What does a whammy bar do?

Also known as a tremolo bar, it simply alters the tension on the strings all at once when pushed down, to create warped notes and also to lengthen them as well.

Fender Squire Bullet Mustang

This thin lightweight model makes it comfortable to play with ease (and also to carry around!) and creates dynamic and powerful tones with its hum-bucking pickups, perfect for rock and indie vibes. It is also a lot easier to move around with if you prefer to stand when playing - or to dance around with.

Finding your sound

When you have purchased your amplifier, get yourself familiar with it and mess around with all the settings, most amps will come with a few guides for different tones such as 'vintage rock', but if you feel a bit more adventurous, then have fun with it! This is the easiest way to find your own unique sound and vibes and also a brilliant way to discover famous guitarists' favourite settings and modifiers, so you can sound just like them!

If you don't feel that the amp is giving you enough of the sound that you want, try purchasing a range of pedals as well. We recommend a looper pedal so that you can overlay different parts of songs and piece them together to recreate anthems, they're also incredibly handy if you feel like creating your own tunes. If you want a heavier, grungy sound, try out the Boss Overdrive and Distortion pedal boards, they'll make you feel like a real rockstar.
